Hurricanes are among nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. According to the National Weather Service, 64 hurricanes have struck the Texas coast since 1851. That’s one every three years on average. Hurricane season just started this year, running from June 1 to November 30. This year the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts 85% chance of an above average season, expecting to name 17 to 25 storms this season that qualify with winds higher than 39mph

For these reasons, hurricane preparedness is an important topic for our Houston facilities. Our plants have learned, from decades of experiences and evolving best practices, how to systematically prepare when a hurricane threatens the Gulf Coast. Every year, Sekisui’s Pasadena Plant participates in the Annual Hurricane Workshop and Safety Fair. The event is an opportunity for the community to gather and learn more about how to ensure the safety of families and businesses residing in the area.

This year the event occurred on Saturday June 1st. Keynote speaker Dan Reilly, a Meteorologist with the U.S. National Weather Service, was present to speak on the importance of planning and caution. Over one thousand residents of Pasadena, Laporte, and Deer Park attended in addition to the government persons who represent them. The even was organized by the South East Regional Local Emergency Planning Committee (SERLEPC).

While there are many elements of hurricane season that are unpredictable, our ability to prepare for them is one of the biggest things we can do to ensure the safety of our employees, their families and the communities they live in.
